Milomir Joksimović, better known as Miša Omega, was found dead yesterday in an apartment in Palilula, and police are investigating the circumstances of his death. Joksimović, it should be recalled, owned numerous companies and was once dubbed the “gravel king,” with estimates suggesting he held ownership stakes in more than 100 businesses.
The circumstances under which Joksimović was found have not yet been officially disclosed, but some reports indicate he was discovered with a gunshot wound, raising suspicions of suicide.
His biography was once covered by Politika, which stated that his wealth in 2009 was measured in tens (possibly hundreds) of millions of euros. The article was prompted by an incident in which workers of the company “1. maj” from Lapovo—owned by Joksimović—slept on railway tracks for two weeks in subzero temperatures due to unpaid wages. It was also noted that, until then, the public did not even know what Joksimović looked like, and even nearly two decades later, there are almost no photos of him online.
Who was Miša Omega?
Milomir Joksimović, who held a master’s degree in economics, was born in Belgrade in 1961. With his wife Zorana, he had two sons, Milan (23) and Jovan (22), both involved in the family business as company owners or board members.
In addition to his flagship company “Omega Komerc,” from which he got his nickname, Joksimović himself admitted that he directly or indirectly held ownership stakes in as many as 100 companies.
He was known as the “Serbian gravel king,” and although he was not the official owner of the “Dunav Group,” he privatized several companies that operated within that holding.
The group included firms such as “Heroj Pinki” from Novi Sad, the Belgrade-based “Bagersko-brodarsko preduzeće,” “Napredak” from Apatin, “Brodarstvo” and “Vojvodinaput” from Zrenjanin, and “Hidrograđevinar” from Sremska Mitrovica.
Owner of hotels, restaurants, and a travel agency
Aside from gravel, as Politika reported, the Joksimović family also had a major interest in hospitality. They allegedly owned hotels “Central” in Zemun and “Palas” in Jagodina, “Srebrnac” on Kopaonik, “Zelenkada” on Zlatibor, restaurants “Rujno” and “Serdarev konak” on Zlatibor, and the villa “Poštanski dom” in Vrnjačka Banja. They also held a stake in the company “Tri grozda,” which operates a dozen of the most famous and oldest traditional restaurants in central Belgrade.
The family also owned part of “Zlatibor turist,” which includes the luxury apartment complex “Kraljevi konaci,” the “Jezero” restaurant, and usage rights to 13.5 hectares of “socially owned construction land,” including the lake in the center of Zlatibor. Media also reported that the Joksimović family owned half of the well-known travel agency “Kon Tiki Travel,” and were unofficially linked to companies such as “Poliester” from Priboj, “Radan” from Pečenjevac, and the orthopedic equipment manufacturer “Rudo.”
Success in business, it was often said, requires strong connections—and Joksimović reportedly had them on both sides of the law. After October 5, he was a member of the Main Board of the Democratic Party.
Connected to powerful figures
He claimed that Zoran Đinđić, to whom he was introduced by Milan Beko, had once offered him the position of deputy prime minister, which he said he declined.
He was also considered a close friend of retired police general Goran Radosavljević. On the other hand, Joksimović grew up among tough circles in Karaburma and reportedly knew figures such as Ljuba Zemunac, Željko Ražnatović, and Joca Amsterdam.
Miša Omega, Politika wrote, did not hide that he lived in a 1,000-square-meter residence and was not ashamed of his wealth.
He advised young people not to leave Serbia, while modestly stating in a Belgrade weekly that he did not want to be anyone’s idol.
Neighbors rarely saw him
After his body was found in the Palilula apartment, neighbors said he lived alone, had been ill, and that they rarely saw him.
