Matvey Rumyantsev, a Russian national and MMA fighter who brutally beat a young woman while she was speaking with Barron Trump, the youngest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Barron Trump (20) witnessed the attack on January 18 last year while on a video call with the victim, who was in London at the time. He immediately contacted British police to report what he had seen.
In addition to the assault conviction, Rumyantsev was also found guilty of obstructing justice after writing to the victim from prison, asking her to withdraw her accusations.
He was acquitted on one count of rape and intentional strangulation related to the same day as the attack, as well as on another count of rape and assault allegedly committed in November 2024.
What was Barron Trump’s role?
The court heard that Matvey Rumyantsev answered a FaceTime call from Barron Trump and turned the screen toward the woman, who was crying and screaming on the floor.
According to a transcript of the call submitted to the City of London Police, Trump said: “Oh, I’m calling from the U.S., I just got a call from a girl—you know, she’s being beaten.”
In an email sent to investigators in May last year, he later stated that what he saw was “very brief, but it happened.”
“I didn’t expect her to answer due to the time difference, considering I’m in the U.S. She picked up, but not her—to my horror… The person who answered was a shirtless man with dark hair. Although I didn’t see clearly, that view lasted maybe a second, and I was full of adrenaline. The camera then shifted to the victim, who was being struck while crying and saying something in Russian. The guy hung up. This entire interaction lasted five to seven seconds,” Barron told police.
Rumyantsev told the court that he learned the victim had been socializing with Barron Trump in October 2024, adding that he had been “somewhat jealous.”
“They portray me as a jealous person who can lose control because of jealousy,” the convicted man said.
“I just want to clarify that her actions toward him were wrong and not fair,” Rumyantsev allegedly added, although it was not clarified whether he was referring to Barron.
