The Police Administration in Novi Sad was notified last night around 8:45 p.m. that a boat carrying at least ten people, including citizens of the People’s Republic of China, capsized on the Danube River near the town of Plavna, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) announced.
Immediately upon the report, patrols from the PU in Novi Sad, border police, and members of the Sector for Emergency Situations were dispatched, and the police of the Republic of Croatia were also contacted, the statement added.
In Bačko Novo Selo, one person, a Chinese citizen, was pulled out of the water during the rescue operation, and his death was confirmed, the MUP stated.
Also, four more Chinese citizens have been found so far and provided with medical assistance.
According to current information, the Croatian police pulled five Chinese citizens – three men and two women – out of the Danube, the MUP added.
The police continue the search and, in cooperation with the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, which qualified this event as a criminal offense of unauthorized crossing of the state border and smuggling of people, are taking measures and actions to determine all the circumstances of this event.
