Melania Trump writes in her upcoming memoir that women should have the right to abortion, as reported by the British newspaper The Guardian. Her husband, Donald Trump, supports the right of US states to restrict abortion.

“Why should anyone but the woman herself have the power to decide what she does with her body,” Melania Trump wrote in her memoir, which will be released four weeks before the US presidential election on November 5, in which her husband is competing against Democrat Kamala Harris.

“To limit a woman’s right to decide to end an unwanted pregnancy is the same as taking away her control over her own body. I have held this belief throughout my adult life,” The Guardian quotes Melania Trump’s memoir.

The British newspaper stated that it had obtained a copy of the book titled “Melania,” which will be published on October 8. A spokesperson for the former First Lady did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

At the same time, Donald Trump’s position is that states should decide on abortion laws, and he supports exceptions to the abortion ban in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.

Pre-election polls predict a tight race, with seven key states likely to decide the outcome of the election. Democrats see the right to abortion as a popular issue that Harris could use against Trump.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between August 21 and 28 found that a majority of voters, including 34% of Republicans, want the next president to protect or increase access to abortion.

Trump takes credit for the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling, which protected the right to abortion until 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy, as the decision was made by judges appointed by Trump.
