Speaking about the criticism directed at actor Nenad Jezdić, academician Dušan Kovačević said that condemning him after thirty years of work is “to say the least, improper.” Kovačević emphasized that after every performance of The Book of Milutin at the Zvezdara Theatre, Jezdić raises his šajkača cap as a sign of respect.

“In this house (Zvezdara Theatre, author’s note) performs Jezda, around whom there is now great controversy and uproar. He plays Milutin, and after three years, the play is nearing its 400th performance. At the end of each performance, which lasts over two hours, he raises his šajkača in greeting and salutes the audience. At every performance, the audience applauds him with a standing ovation. Without that šajkača, we wouldn’t even exist today. Because that šajkača served and helped our people, especially soldiers during the First World War, and the story (the play) is about the First World War,” said Kovačević.

Nenad Jezdić became the target of criticism on social media after a video surfaced showing the cast taking a bow following the performance of The Traveling Troupe Šopalović at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre (JDP).

All the actors raised their student index books in support of the students protesting in blockade, except Jezdić.

Kovačević emphasized that Jezdić “should not be condemned by anyone who hasn’t done more than he has.”

“Anyone who has done more and better than him may speak up, but those below the level of dedication and work he has invested — should not even mention his name,” said Dušan Kovačević.
