Grandma Jela Đurđević (78) lives alone in the heart of the Bobija mountain, in the village of Gornja Orovica, in a house without electricity or water! There is no living soul within four kilometers of her. Grandma chops wood herself, and washes dishes and clothes in spring water. Her only company are the cats she sometimes talks to, because – there’s no one else!
The fate of this grandmother was first presented by humanitarian Marko Nikolić from Vranje, who posted her story on social media.
-Grandma Jela lives in a house without electricity and water. She gets water from a spring. Grandma lives in the village of Gornja Orovica. She is surrounded by endless expanses of forests where wild animals are her first and only neighbors – Marko wrote in the video description.
Bobija is a mountain in Western Serbia in the region called Azbukovica, located between the right bank of the Drina River, the Sokolski Mountains, Jablanik, Medvednik, and the Trešnjica Canyon. It is 140 kilometers from Belgrade, 30 kilometers from Ljubovija, and a kilometer or so more from Bajina Bašta and Valjevo.
Grandma’s house stands in the middle of the forest. It stands out white and lonely in a sea of green.
-I eat what I have. When I have it, I have it, when I don’t, I don’t! – says the grandmother in the video, which quickly attracted a lot of attention.
The grandmother lives hard, her income is 14,000 dinars a month.
The house is old. Made of mud. The walls are bare, the floor is unkempt – no parquet, tiles, or laminate… In the house there is a table with a tablecloth, a bed, several dilapidated wooden benches, and – an icon.
-I miss the light and firewood the most. Winter is hard for me, there’s no one to chop wood – she says.
And she also misses people:
-I’m lonely, I have no one to talk to, I talk to the cat. No one comes to see me! – says the grandmother sadly while making coffee for Marko.
Humanitarian Marko Nikolić, who has helped many families through his humanitarian organization, tells Kurir that he has already brought the grandmother enough food for two months, and their plan is to install solar panels on her property so that she has electricity.
-Grandma lives very hard. She only has 14,000 dinars a month. She lives alone. She has never married. She has a sister and a brother who is ill, but they live far away. She says she needs electricity and firewood the most. Our plan is to install solar panels and completely equip the house – buy her a refrigerator, TV, furniture, heating for the winter… – says Marko, adding that they have also contacted the municipality for help, because there is no passable road to the grandmother’s house, which will be a problem for bringing things and renovating.
-Grandma is lonely. She says no one comes to visit her. Her dog and cat are her only company – says Marko.
Once, Marko recounted, a jackal attacked her dog, and she defended it from the dangerous beast without hesitation:
-However, despite everything, she is cheerful, kind, and has a bright spirit. She was very happy to see us. She wanted to host us, to talk to us…
