SUBOTICA, Serbia – The bodies of two migrants were discovered over the weekend in the territory of Subotica.

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Subotica is leading the investigation into the case, the Subotica Police Department told Tanjug.

The body of one migrant was found on Friday, May 16, and the second the following day, May 17.

It is not yet known whether the deaths were violent, but local media reports suggest the possibility of an inter-migrant conflict.

A report by the Global Initiative, which focuses on migrant smuggling, published estimates that at least 150 migrants cross into Serbia daily via illegal border crossings. Istanbul serves as a major hub from which migrants enter the Western Balkans, according to Nova ekonomija.

The research also determined the prices migrants pay to smugglers to reach Western countries.

For multi-country routes from Turkey to Bulgaria and Serbia, the price is 3,468 euros, from Greece via North Macedonia to Serbia 1,033 euros, and from Syria to Germany 12,600 euros. For single border crossings, prices are lower, with the cost from Montenegro to Bosnia and Herzegovina being 315 euros, and from Serbia to Bosnia 235 euros, according to GI data.
