Alon Ohel, a 24-year-old young man with Israeli and Serbian citizenship who was a hostage of Hamas for two years, is now recovering after the terrifying torture and torment he went through.
In an interview for “Blic” television, Alon’s mother, Idit Ohel, revealed that she will never forget the day she saw her son again.
The mother who waited two years to see her son again at her doorstep says she never allowed herself to think he wouldn’t return.
The day all the suffering disappeared -That day when he returned on October 13, was a very emotional day. I think the whole day was like that. It started at 6 in the morning when we started waiting for him to arrive. We were very impatient to see what was happening and we didn’t know what Alon would be like. I remember sitting and watching everything on television. It was a special television, it’s like a closed circuit for the IDF, so only we could see him being taken over by the Red Cross and handed over to our soldiers. We could see him going through all that and coming out. I remember when I saw him, I was beside myself with excitement and happiness – Idit Ohel told “Blic”.
Idit adds that she will never forget the suffering she experienced and survived.
-I think these two years have given me a lot of strength. I think they have changed me. I think I am a different person compared to the one I was on October 7, 2023, so I will never forget them. In fact, those two years shaped me into the person I am today, and I think it is very important to remember what happened and how we as a family and each of us individually experienced those two years. A lot can be learned from our experience, and I have a lot to offer this world about how to go through something so difficult and be able to overcome everything. I think that is very important. So, I don’t want to forget, but I want to use it to my advantage and see what time has taught me – explained Idit.
Idit says that she and her family dedicated two years to the fight to bring their son home; that fight is over, and now new challenges and new victories await them.
– It was very emotional to see Alon return home. You have to see where you are after so much. For two years, we fought to bring Alon home, and we didn’t have a life. We were only fighting for him. And now that he is home, there are different challenges. Obviously, it’s his health and everything he went through, and we have to be there for him. We have many different medical problems that he has to take care of. So, we are here, trying to rebuild ourselves. We as a family and he as an individual, are trying to find our way again. But it’s good because he’s home – said Idit Ohel.
As a reminder, Serbian citizen Alon Ohel (24) was kidnapped on October 7, 2023, from a shelter at the Nova music festival. He suffered severe injuries, including the loss of sight in one eye, and his vision in the other eye is also compromised. Released hostages confirmed that Alon was held captive in tunnels, chained, and without proper medical treatment.
Alon was released from captivity in Gaza on October 13.
