In Serbia until the first half of August, the participants of the protests mostly did not resort to violence, but from the beginning, the participants of all anti-government manifestations were physically attacked by organized, partly masked thugs loyal to the regime of President Aleksandar Vučić, and these attacks were very rarely the subject of investigation, writes the German newspaper Spiegel today.
The German newspaper writes that now in Serbia, at demonstrations against the regime of President Aleksandar Vučić, violent incidents have occurred for the fourth day in a row.
As an example, it cites the attack of “a small group of masked people” on the headquarters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), on the city administration and the local prosecutor’s office in Valjevo.
The cause of the protesters’ anger, writes the Spiegel portal, is that two days earlier, “thugs of the ruling SNS destroyed the cafe of a sympathizer of the protest movement”, and then “the same night, the thugs attacked the workshop of the father of a student activist and beat the head of the workshop so badly that he ended up in the hospital”.
“The new dynamic with violent incidents, which are partly caused by the demonstrators, is attributed by independent media to the frustration of citizens due to the passivity of the authorities towards the violence of the regime loyalists,” writes Spiegel.
The newspaper writes that there were also conflicts between demonstrators and the police in New Belgrade and Novi Sad, but that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivica Dačić, only announced that one member of the gendarmerie was injured in Novi Sad, and 18 demonstrators were detained.
“The Serbian authorities never publish data on the number of injured protest participants,” it adds.
The German newspaper reminds that the Council of Europe Commissioner Michael O’Flaherty also expressed concern on August 15 about the “disproportionate use of police force” in Serbia and called for an end to arbitrary arrests and for a de-escalation of the situation.
