MP from Kosovo and Metohija Žarko Ristić issued a statement regarding the current events in Serbia related to the mass protests and violence by regime supporters, and we are transmitting his open letter to the public in its entirety:
Brothers, MPs, let’s play a one-two pass with our students, not with the regime.
As an MP from Kosovo and Metohija, I must speak up and remind, first and foremost, my fellow MPs, not to play the same game as a year ago. A year ago, more precisely on September 10, 2024, I was the first MP to call on other opposition MPs to give up the initiative for a parliamentary session on lithium and to leave the assembly. You did not listen to me. You continued to demand a session on Lithium.
At that time, there were barely 86 of you MPs, including Nestorović’s MPs. The people were already walking, blocking streets across the country and drawing attention to the problems related to lithium through civil disobedience. Unfortunately, you played, in slang terms, a “one-two pass” with the regime, and you got a session on Lithium. The epilogue was that the protests were stifled and everything returned to the parliamentary benches. These parliamentary benches are the place where the Vučić Brothers’ regime feels safest. There they have absolute control, as seen before.
A year after that, when there are thousands of people on the streets almost every night across Serbia, you are playing the old game again. You are demanding an “urgent session” to “urgently” talk. With whom do you want to talk? And about what? The Vučić Brothers have brought the army and police to the streets, they have created a fortress in the middle of Belgrade? The dissatisfaction is much greater than a year ago, because all social groups have joined the fight against the thieving regime.
Thanks to the purity of the actions of our students and their professors, a much wider front has been created, and the regime no longer controls that front. Why, then, are you offering to return everything to Vučić’s assembly according to the old recipe? Why, Brothers, are you passing the ball back to his field, with a kick into the void? An urgent session is a kick into the void because there are not enough of us there and because we have no say there.
The students have succeeded in something that no one could have even expected. Thank you, students. Let’s play a one-two pass with the student protest. Instead of demanding “urgent sessions” and “transitional governments with Vučić,” leave the assembly and send support to the people. Announce that you no longer want to participate in the work of Vučić’s Assembly. You don’t want to because Serbia is deeply steeped in crime and the regime has started to apply brutal force against its citizens. Innocent people are being arrested, random passers-by are being detained, women and children are being beaten, and students and their professors are being demonized…
Serbia is in the greatest crisis in its history, a millimeter away from civil war. A new parliamentary balance is needed. Let’s demand even more strongly that elections be called, let’s support that demand of the citizens. The regime is in a knockout. Just a few nights ago, all members of the Vučić family ran to Ćaciland in the late evening hours. This means that the regime has been shaken to its foundations.
Since I am an independent MP without much visibility and political power, I would use this announcement to inform you that there are also elections for local parliaments in Kosovo and Metohija. This means that the fight has begun for seats in which Serbs are the majority. I would greet my colleagues who have already joined that race, but I would also call on all others to join because we need support.
Remember, the people are always right, and the people say: “Strike while the iron is hot.” It’s hot both in K&M and in Belgrade. Let’s forge the most beautiful work with our citizens, let’s create a new Serbia…
