A wildfire, which authorities in McDowell County have described as “out of control,” has broken out near the town of Old Fort in western North Carolina, just four months after the area was struck by Hurricane Helen.

According to CBS News, initial reports indicate that the fire was caused by a tree falling onto a power line.

The fire erupted after emergency management officials issued a wind advisory, which went into effect at midnight on Wednesday (local time).

Officials have warned of wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h (50 mph), which are expected to persist until 6 PM local time today.

As of Wednesday evening, the fire had burned 250 hectares (617 acres) and was 15% contained, according to emergency management officials, CBS News reports.

The wildfire in Old Fort, North Carolina, comes almost four months after Hurricane Helen made landfall and heavily impacted the town.

Evacuations are currently underway in some areas of Old Fort, which was among the hardest-hit locations when the hurricane struck in late September.

Strong winds continue to create dangerous conditions for the wildfire,” McDowell County Emergency Management stated in its latest warning.

Authorities believe that tens of thousands of homes were damaged across western North Carolina during Hurricane Helen in September.
