Renowned Serbian basketball players, Bogdan Bogdanović and Nemanja Nedović, have publicly endorsed the way Novak Đoković celebrates his victories at the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
They posted a photo of Novak’s “pumping” gesture after a win on their Instagram accounts, a gesture widely interpreted as direct support for the protesting citizens and students in Serbia.
After each triumph, Đoković performs this “pumping” motion while looking at his box, where his son, daughter, and wife reciprocate in a similar manner. When asked by journalists about the meaning, Đoković diplomatically responds that it’s connected to the song “Pump it up,” which translates to “pump it” in Serbian, often followed by shouts of “Pump it, Nole” from the crowd.
It is speculated that Đoković cannot openly state that this is a show of support for students and citizens, as it could be interpreted as political interference in sports.

The fact that everyone in Serbia clearly understands the message is evidenced by a special program on one of the television channels supporting the current government in Serbia. Guests on the show condemned Đoković’s behavior and concluded that it signals Novak’s preparation to enter politics.
“It would be good if he openly said what he thinks, instead of hiding behind children,” former Minister of Construction Zorana Mihajlović stated on the occasion.
Đoković’s victory celebrations and his support for the protesting students and citizens have been publicly welcomed by all faculties in blockade, as well as nearly all opposition leaders.
Students from the School of Electrical Engineering (ETF) in Belgrade have invited him to celebrate his Wimbledon successes with them, promising that a million people will greet him in Belgrade.
