The canopy didn’t fall by itself – they stole money and killed my child, and now they want to build a monument to the victims, said Dijana Hrka, the mother of the young man Stefan Hrka, who is one of the 16 victims of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad.

Dijana Hrka first told Serbia and the students that she loves them, but added that she sees the recent arrests as a farce.

“I think Vučić wants to cover something up, like ‘we’ve arrested them.’ Give me evidence, give me convicts. I don’t care if they are just arrested, I want them to be convicted. I want to see people in prison and I want to know who killed my child. That same Vučić should be held accountable. Let him call me as the mother of the victim, so we can talk about everything publicly. I want answers, I want to know who killed my child and that’s it,” she said.

Dijana Hrka returned to Serbia after three months. She left the country because she was threatened.

“I am not afraid of anyone. You die once. I want those responsible for the canopy collapse. Even if it’s Vučić himself. He reconstructed all that. He put them there. He authorized people to do it. Not me, he authorized them. Let him come out now, let him give me everything he should give me,” she said.

When asked what she would like to be the epilogue of this rebellion, she says – for this government to fall.

“I want this government to fall, and I’m addressing President Vučić directly. He is not my president. I have said that and I repeat it. He is not my president. I want this government to fall. I want this government to go. I want this oppression of students to stop,” she stated.

Dijana Hrka says that the canopy did not fall by itself, but because “they were stealing”.

“And now they say ‘we will build a monument to the victims.’ What victims, you killed them? They killed my child. The canopy didn’t fall by itself, but because they didn’t do their job properly. Because they stole the money. Because they were stealing,” Hrka said.

She asked Žarko Mićin who he is to speak on behalf of the victims.

“Who is he to erect a monument to my child? They will not erect a monument, they should know that. If we are going to erect a monument, we and the citizens will do it,” she said.
