The hurricane continues to shake Florida, and in the center of this weather disaster was Priboj native Stefan Srbljanović, a political science doctoral student conducting research in the US. As he says, it was a very difficult night for all residents.

“The part where I am located passed without major damage, both due to the higher quality construction of buildings and the fact that we prepared quite well. Before the hurricane, we put metal shields on all the windows, so during the hurricane itself, which passed during the night, we hardly felt the intensity of the bad weather inside”, Stefan told RINA.

He adds that the storm also caused the appearance of over 100 tornadoes, which left devastating consequences in Fort Myers, Tampa, Sarasota… In those parts, the tornadoes carried entire houses, roofs.

“The area where we are located lost power only during the night, but it is specific because it is located in the immediate vicinity of the hospital and police station, so it is on a special power supply. However, in other areas, from 40 to 90% of the population has no electricity and it is not known when they will get it. In the hardest hit areas, there is no drinking water. This morning we tried to reach the Gulf of Mexico coast and the beach, the police let us through so that a friend could visit his property. Luckily, there wasn’t as much damage as two years ago. However, the entire strip along the beach is in a catastrophic situation, boats and yachts have been thrown out of the docks, some restaurants and buildings are completely flooded. As I said, the police are still not allowing access”, says the man from Priboj.

Although the weather conditions are slowly returning to normal, the population is afraid of new disasters. Namely, there is a potential danger of two new hurricanes: one that is located over the Atlantic and for which it is not known in which direction it could continue, and another, for which there is speculation that it is forming in the same place as the previous Milton.

“For that reason, a good part of the population does not plan an immediate return to West Florida to their places of residence, and some of those who remained have kept the shields on the windows and other preventive measures. As a reminder, it is estimated that about 6 million residents temporarily left their homes, a smaller number due to mandatory evacuation, and a significant part of those who voluntarily decided to spend the period during the storm in a more comfortable way in another state. Unfortunately, there are casualties, but fewer than from Hurricane Helena when over 200 people died”, says Stefan.
Unofficially, there are no casualties or injuries among our citizens, and some have suffered only minor material damage.
