A paraglider who landed in a tree in Gornja Trepča during a competition was successfully rescued thanks to the swift and coordinated action of rescuers from the Extreme Sports Club “Armadillo” and fire and rescue units from the Sector for Emergency Situations.
“We received a call around 2 PM. We reacted very quickly in cooperation with the Sector for Emergency Situations, and fire-rescuers were also there. Within 45 minutes, we arrived at the scene. We located him very easily because the paraglider had a whistle – that’s an unwritten rule among paragliders, which means a lot in such situations. He was about 15 meters high, not injured. We set up the system, approached him, harnessed him, and safely brought him to the ground,” Petar Šunderić from “Armadillo” told RINA.
He added that there were no houses near where the paraglider landed; the closest was about one kilometer away as the crow flies, which further complicated the situation.
Thanks to the presence of mind of the participant and the training of the rescuers, such situations end without consequences. Even when danger comes from heights, they are ready to climb among the branches and help in extreme situations. When asked how risky such interventions are for the rescuers themselves, Šunderić replied:
“It all depends on the weather conditions. Fortunately, the conditions were favorable this time, and previous exercises and long-term cooperation with the Sector for Emergency Situations contributed to the safety and efficiency of the action.”
The Extreme Sports Club Armadillo Čačak has opened a call for new members who want to be part of the emergency rescue team. The conditions for participating in the call are that the candidate must be 18 years or older, have good psycho-physical fitness, and reside in Čačak, Lučani, or Požega.
Participants undergo basic mountaineering training (summer and winter) and a first aid course, and future rescuers must be available for actions and exercises for the next three years.
