Croatian water polo representative Jerko Marinić Kragić was sentenced to six months in prison.
The shocking news echoed through the region, and the information was reported by “Dalmatinski portal”.
As stated, the time spent in custody was included in the pronounced sentence, and the sentence was replaced by community service.
Three other people were arrested along with Marinić Kragić.
The famous Croatian water polo player was convicted due to an incident that occurred during the European Football Championship in France.
The match between Croatia and the Czech Republic at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Étienne was interrupted in the 86th minute due to chaos in the stands.
According to the indictment of the Municipal State Attorney’s Office in Split, Marinić Kragić and three other persons were found guilty of causing riots in the stands.
They were charged with, aiming to prevent the continuation of the match, verbally and physically attacking fans and stewards who were trying to prevent more serious riots. It is also stated that they incited others to violence and the continuation of the conflict.
The accused denied guilt during the proceedings. Marinić Kragić claimed that he was trying to separate the participants of the conflict and calm the situation, but the Court made the decision based on photographs and video recordings from the stadium.
The Football Federation of Croatia was fined 100,000 euros due to the events at the stadium in Saint-Étienne.
