On Sunday, during the election day, in the village of Sarbanovci near Bor, unknown thugs with masks on their faces randomly exited black jeeps and beat activists, journalists, and students. On that day, Lazar Dinic, a student, Revolt journalist, and activist of the Stav group, suffered severe physical injuries and is awaiting surgery on his sinus bone after such a merciless beating. In a conversation with Nova.rs, Dinic says that masked thugs beat him until they broke the bones of his head and until he agreed to say that “Aca is president.”

Three days have passed since the local elections were held in 10 municipalities in Serbia. Those who supported the student list and worked as observers suffered serious consequences of numerous attacks in certain places. Some of the most severe occurred in Bor and its surroundings.

The public in Serbia will remember the photographs of Lazar Dinic, who was urgently hospitalized on Sunday with a bloody head.

And what happened?

He was visiting polling stations in the village of Sarbanovci near Bor with journalist Ivan Bjelic, as well as with opposition councilor in the last convocation Aleksandar Kulic and photojournalist Zorica Popovic. And everything was proceeding in the best order, until the appearance of black jeeps.

“After visiting the polling stations, we headed toward the car to return to Bor. However, several unknown people with masks appeared and attacked Zorica and Ivan. I saw that they tried to snatch the camera from Zorica when Ivan approached to help her, so they started beating him too. First, I started filming them, but Ivan warned me that they would take my phone. Then Aleksandar and I ran for the car so we could go back for them and pull them out. We stopped next to them with the car and got out to help them, to pull them out so they could get into the car and we could escape. Unfortunately, we did not succeed,” says Dinic, who was recently discharged from the hospital but is preparing for a new hospitalization due to sinus bone surgery at maxillofacial surgery in Belgrade.

When Aleksandar and Lazar got out of the car, another jeep appeared.

“Several more of them with masks on their faces came out of it, first they beat Zorica and Ivan, and then they started chasing me. I was in great fear, I ran as fast as I could and managed to escape them. At least I thought so. I went down to the river to hide, however, they followed me and found me. I slipped and fell into the Timok. Then they approached the shore and told me to get out and hand over my phone. I managed to get out because the water there is not deep.”

“Aca president!”

When Lazar came out of the river all wet, they started, as he testifies, to beat him uncontrollably.

“I curled up to endure the blows more easily, but I was soon covered in blood. They hit me in the head and demanded that I say that ‘Aca is president.’ Everything hurt so much, they didn’t stop until I forced myself to say what they demanded, so that they would stop. I said what they asked of me. They filmed everything, and then they left with my phone and left me there all bloody,” remembers Lazar, who is currently in Bor.

He points out that the police have in the meantime detained several attackers from Bor, but not all of them.

Otherwise, after the beating, Lazar’s entire sinus bone was fractured.

“I have terrible pain, and now my arms and legs hurt too, only the swelling on my head has subsided a little,” says this brave student.

As a reminder, on Sunday, March 29, local elections were held in 10 municipalities in Serbia. On that day, a large number of citizens, students, and activists monitoring the polling stations were attacked by unknown thugs. It seems, however, that those in Bor fared the worst. Besides randomly exiting black jeeps and attacking citizens, according to eyewitness claims, the PIO fund building was a gathering place for dozens of SNS thugs, who left that building in an orchestrated manner several times during the day and engaged in physical confrontations with dissenters. Numerous citizens sustained severe physical injuries and ended up in the hospital, and among them was Lazar Dinic.
