High school student from Kikinda Helena Grujić, a third-grade student of the natural sciences and mathematics department, won first place and a gold medal in physics at the National Showcase of Research Papers for High School Students, organized by the Center for Talents in Belgrade.
She excelled with the paper “Design of Fresnel Lenses,” which she completed together with Naum Matić from Belgrade, within the IS Petnica program and under the mentorship of Aleksa Denčevski. At the same competition last year, the young woman from Kikinda won third place, and her latest success takes her to India next month for an international showcase.
-We compared the Fresnel lens with other lenses and showed the advantages and disadvantages of both. We presented the most effective one, which can be used for various purposes and is very practical. The advantages of this type of lens are that it is much cheaper to manufacture because it is made of polymer, which is a type of plastic, rather than glass. Less material is needed for production, and besides that, it is not thick but rather much thinner than others and has openings, ridges, through which light rays pass and are thus refracted. Such lenses are also lighter than others – explained Helena, who says she has always been interested in optics because she has worn glasses for a long time, so she wanted to study what she uses every day.
-Such lenses can have multiple applications: for city lighting, for example, because they have good transmission, as well as for camera focus, because they have excellent focus – states the successful high school student, who plans to study physics, but has not yet decided which branch of this science she would pursue in the future.
At the National Showcase of Researchers, the young woman from Kikinda presented the work alone, as her colleague Naum Matić was prevented from participating due to health reasons. She prepared by herself as well, and that is how she will go to the international competition.
-For five years now, since the seventh grade, I have been intensively involved in scientific research work, and this success is the crown and confirmation that all the effort and work paid off. I have been competing for three years as a high school student and now I am going to an international competition and I hope for success – stated Helena Grujić, a successful student of the “Dušan Vasiljev” high school in Kikinda.
-We are proud of Helena Grujić, and the city will finance the costs of her travel to the international competition in India, registration fees, and accommodation. Otherwise, the city has allocated 1.5 million dinars in the budget to support young talents – says Mayor Mladen Bogdan, who organized a reception for the young and successful student.
