US President Joe Biden has given another “green light” to Ukraine, approving the shipment of anti-personnel mines. This is expected to help slow Russia’s advance in the eastern part of the country.

The United States expects Ukraine to use the mines on its own territory, although it has committed not to use them in areas populated by civilians, a US official told Reuters.

The US has been sending Ukraine anti-tank mines throughout the war, but the addition of anti-personnel mines aims to reduce the progress of Russian ground forces, the official, who wished to remain anonymous, added.

American mines differ from Russian ones because they are “non-persistent” and become inert after a pre-determined period, the official explained.

The mines require a battery for detonation and will not explode once the battery is drained.

As a reminder, Ukraine used US-made ATACMS missiles to strike Russia yesterday, utilizing the new authorization from the Biden administration.

Moscow stated that the use of ATACMS, the longest-range missiles the US has delivered to Ukraine so far, is a clear signal that the West wants to escalate the conflict.

Putin’s response to Biden’s move was to sign a decree approving a new nuclear doctrine.
