Veroljub Naumović, an assistant at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, has been released from the Misdemeanor Court, where he was detained on Wednesday morning. As he told N1, he is accused of taking down the state flag from the SNS premises in Novi Sad during a protest.
“They came for me at seven in the morning, they said the Misdemeanor Court was looking for me and that they would first take me to the police station in Detelinara. They didn’t question me, they just presented me with a document stating what I was being accused of. I refused to sign it,” Naumović recounted how his detention looked this morning.
He explains that the police accuse him of “disturbing the public” because he allegedly took down the Serbian flag from the SNS party premises.
“I didn’t take down the flag, but I was informed about how it looked. Students and faculty employees were providing security for a protest march that ended on the Boulevard. After that, the crowd gathered and went to the premises from which thugs emerged and attacked our student Ana. Some students went in front of the premises and took down the flags, because some other people from the crowd had prepared eggs to throw, and no one wanted the flag to be desecrated,” Naumović explained what happened on the day he allegedly committed the misdemeanor.
He adds that he was told at the Misdemeanor Court that they have security camera footage from the party premises, and that some police officers identified him as the perpetrator.
“I told them that I haven’t been legitimized at least this year, so I don’t know how they exactly picked me out. When they managed to open the recording, it was obvious that it was a handheld recording, which is clearly not legitimate. And the people in the recording didn’t even know who they were referring to. Then they latched onto a person who has the same beard, but nothing more can be said because they are wearing a cap and glasses, and the recording is poor,” Naumović explained.
On Tuesday evening, Miloš Jocić, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, was also detained. He is currently at the police station in Bač, and his transfer to the Misdemeanor Court is still pending.
