Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden today commuted the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment without parole, less than a month before Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

“I am commuting the sentences of 37 out of 40 individuals on federal death row to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole,” Biden stated in an official announcement.

Earlier this month, Biden pardoned 39 individuals and commuted nearly 1,500 prison sentences.
