On the island of Vis in Croatia, around 11 p.m. on Sunday, an open-air fire broke out. The fire engulfed a pine forest and macchia in the area of Komiža, at a location along the road to Podhumlje, the page Vatrogasci 193 reported.
All available forces on the island went out to intervene. Although it was a favorable circumstance that there was no stronger wind during the night, the fire spread rapidly in the first hour due to the extremely dry soil.
An additional difficulty was created by the burin (night wind) which, according to data from the automatic meteorological station Komiža, blew at a speed of about 4 m/s, which is enough for further spreading of the fire.
As confirmed to N1 Zagreb by the DVD Komiža, the fire is not under control on Monday morning, but it is not spreading towards houses. There are eight fire engines, 35 firefighters, and three canadairs on the ground.
From DVD Vis, they sent nine fire engines and about 40 firefighters to the field.
Chief fire commander Slavko Tucaković told N1 that from the area of the Split-Dalmatia County, there are six fire engines, 25 firefighters, and one canadair (four in total) on the ground.
Tucaković believes that the fire will soon be under control.
