“When it comes to the ongoing police investigation, we remind that authorities must strictly respect due process, the rule of law, and fundamental rights. These are the principles at the core of Serbia’s accession process to the European Union,” the European Commission stated, as reported by N1. They added that full respect for the law, as well as academic freedoms, is necessary.
“It is of essential importance that all actions are carried out in full compliance with the law, without any political influence or perception of political influence, with full respect for academic freedoms,” was the message from the European Commission.
Members of the Criminal Police Directorate entered the premises of the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade on Tuesday by order of the Higher Court and at the request of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, in connection with pre-investigation actions regarding the tragic death of a female student of the Faculty of Philosophy.
Students then called for a protest in front of the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade, during which several incidents and physical clashes between the police and demonstrators occurred, and it ended after an address by Rector Vladan Đokić, who stated that there is no information in the Rectorate relevant to the investigation of the student’s death and that the point of the police entry was intimidation.
