The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers today, February 4, mark the holiday dedicated to the Holy Apostle Timothy.

The Holy Apostle Timothy, according to Christian legend, belongs to the group of 17 “little” apostles chosen by Jesus Christ, alongside the 12 great ones who knew him and were his first disciples. His life’s calling was the spread of Christianity and preaching the Gospel.

He was born in Lystra of Lycaonia to a Greek father and a Jewish mother. His mother and grandmother were praised by the Holy Apostle Paul for their unfeigned faith.

In Lystra, Timothy met the great apostle for the first time and was himself a witness when Paul healed a man lame from birth.

Later, Timothy was Paul’s constant companion, traveling with him through Achaia, Macedonia, Italy, and Spain. He was a great preacher of the faith and an excellent orator; Timothy contributed much to the spread and establishment of the Christian faith.

It is believed that he reached our regions as well, primarily Singidunum (today’s Belgrade) through which he spread Christianity. Tradition says that this very saint was the first to declare today’s Serbian capital a “Christian city.”

After Paul’s death, Timothy had Saint John the Evangelist as a teacher, but when Emperor Domitian exiled him from Ephesus to the island of Patmos, Timothy remained in Ephesus to serve as bishop.

During an idolatrous holiday called Katagogium, the heathens, resentful of the Christians, brutally and under masks attacked Timothy and killed him (around the year 93).

His relics were later transferred to Constantinople and buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles, next to the tomb of Saint Luke the Evangelist and Saint Andrew the First-Called.

The Holy Apostle Timothy is considered the protector of good and righteous speakers, as well as sensible people. Legend says that he never raised his voice but always spoke quietly and with respect for the person he was talking to – be it a friend or an enemy.

Therefore, there is no reason to fear your opponents today.

Ask the Holy Apostle Timothy for help and you will have God on your side, so every trouble will be overcome.
