The fire in the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana claimed the lives of 40 people on New Year’s Day. Stefan I. (31), a member of the bar’s security staff, saved several guests from the flames before losing his own life, writes blick.ch, one of Switzerland’s most widely read portals.
On New Year’s night, a party at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana (Canton Valais) turned into a nightmare: the fire killed around 40 people, and more than 100 were seriously injured. As time passes, more details are emerging about the victims, as well as about the heroic acts that took place during this disaster, the portal reports.
This media outlet first highlights the heroism of the Serb Stefan Ivanović (31), who worked as security at this bar, otherwise a favorite nightlife spot for the Serbian and Balkan population.
It is added that Stefan was among the members of the bar’s security staff that evening. When the fire broke out, he first pushed several guests outside, and then returned once more into the flames to save other people. That rescue attempt cost him his life, the text emphasizes.
24 victims identified so far
Until the very last moment, the family held out hope that Stefan, a Serb who, as stated, had lived in Switzerland for 20 years and held citizenship, was still alive. Their hope was fueled by the fact that his phone apparently remained reachable even after the fire.
A French woman who managed to escape in time said that Stefan exposed himself to danger without hesitation in order to protect others, describing him as a man of exceptional courage and selflessness.
Four days after the tragedy in Crans-Montana, 24 of the approximately 40 victims have so far been identified.
We remind that the Serbian ambassador to Switzerland, Ivan Trifunović, said earlier today that the family confirmed that one Serbian citizen is among those killed in the fire at the nightclub in Crans-Montana.
In previous days, the media reported that Serbian citizen Stefan Ivanović (31) was listed as missing. Earlier, the family had sent a DNA sample in order to determine his identity.
Serbian businessman and owner of several restaurants in Crans-Montana, Aco Kalajdžić, said yesterday in an interview for the RTS portal that Stefan Ivanović, according to eyewitness accounts, acted like a true hero.
“He is a young man from the area around Valjevo. He worked as security, was at the door and letting the youth into the bar. However, when the first guests told him what was happening, that there was a fire, he went in and pushed several children out and then kept going back in again, and during that rescue he somehow got trapped. He was very well described by a French woman who got out immediately when it caught fire. She warned him and he went in right away. He acted heroically. I hope he did not pay with his life. I know him personally, I know his parents,” Kalajdžić said emotionally.
We remind that the Valais cantonal police announced today that another 16 people killed in the fire have been identified, of whom 10 are Swiss (they did not specify whether any of them have dual citizenship), aged between 14 and 31.
Furthermore, they include two Italians aged 16, one Italian-Emirati citizen aged 16, one Romanian aged 18, one Frenchman aged 39, and one Turk aged 18.
So far, a total of 24 deceased have been identified in the club in Crans-Montana.
