The court in Priština sentenced Milun Milenković and Aleksandar Vlajić in the first instance to five years in prison each, for allegedly committing the criminal act of terrorism, i.e., an armed attack on the office of the Municipal Election Commission in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica, in December 2022. Dejan Pantić was sentenced in the same process to two years for alleged hooliganism.
According to the verdict of the presiding judge of the court panel, Judge Valjon Kurtaj, Miomir Vakić was acquitted of the charges.
The convicted have the right to appeal the first-instance court’s verdict to the appellate court.
The time spent in detention will be counted towards their sentence.
The accused were not present at the session where the verdict was announced.
Lawyer Dejan A. Vasić said that he is sure that the convictions handed down by the court today cannot pass in the Appellate Court.
“I have no doubt that my colleagues who defended Milun Milenković, Aleksandar Vlajić, and Dejan Pantić will succeed in proving their innocence by the end of the procedure. Regarding Miomir Vakić, the court accepted the defense’s arguments which we pointed out from the beginning of the proceedings. This success is part of the teamwork of my colleagues from the office, the acquitted Miomir Vakić, and me,” said Dejan A. Vasić.
The defense lawyers of the accused Serbs pointed out shortcomings during the court process, and lawyer Ljubomir Pantović, Dejan Pantić’s defense lawyer, said that the prosecutors completely forgot what it means to withdraw from an indictment, to withdraw from criminal prosecution due to lack of evidence.
“That doesn’t exist here with them. And that is a legal obligation. All prosecutors are obliged not to file an indictment when there is no evidence, or if it is determined during the procedure that there is no evidence, to withdraw from criminal prosecution. Here, the exact opposite is happening. An empty, chaotic, absolutely unproven indictment stands against these four,” Pantović said after the last hearing.
