Balkan cuisine is always a special experience for Western tourists, but there are “nuances” that differentiate, for example, Serbian and Albanian food.
Balkans will probably never agree on who has the best traditional cuisine, but foreigners actually started a thread on Reddit precisely by asking: Is Serbian or Albanian food better?
Immediately, “fans” from both sides chimed in, though some also suggested other favorites (Romania, Hungary).
“Serbia has Balkan cuisine. Albania has a mix of Balkan, Mediterranean (Greek, Italian), seafood is a big part, and then there’s our traditional food. It’s biased, but it should be Albania.”
“Serbian – and I’ve tried both.” “Serbian, definitely,” someone tried to close the “voting,” but there were still undecided opinions.
“Serbia also has some Austro-Hungarian food in the north,” some added. “The same applies in southern Albania with Greek/Mediterranean food,” others countered.
“It’s Balkan food, pretty much the same,” opined “an outsider,” and it turned out to be the most concise description: “Grilled meat, pastries, and soups.”
And it seems that the entire discussion boils down to this – we can compare and debate, but for foreigners, it’s all Balkan cuisine, and they find it excellent.
“Ultimately, cuisines will have commonalities because it’s pretty hard not to be influenced by others. I don’t care as long as the food is good and in my belly,” they concluded.
