“Teodora Martinko wrote to me, you know mom, she’s the lady I did the fundraiser for,” said Marek Ponjičan (13), a young humanitarian from Bački Petrovac, with a special joy in his voice. Marek was especially happy yesterday. After organizing a bake sale to raise money for Teodora Martinko from Kisač—who was seriously injured when a canopy collapsed in Novi Sad—he received a letter he will surely remember for the rest of his life. The letter was from Teodora Martinko herself.
The brave young mother, for whom all of Serbia is praying, sent a heartfelt message to the boy about the importance of empathy and unity, showing that she, too, has a big heart.
Marek especially loves letters, and Teodora knew this, so she decided to bring him joy and thank him for all his efforts. His mother said the happiness in his voice couldn’t be described, and his eyes had a special sparkle.

“Dear Marek, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful initiative. Your humanitarian action, in which you raised funds for me by selling cakes, is not just an act of kindness—it’s a beacon of hope, love, and compassion. Thanks to you, the world is a better and more beautiful place today. Your selfless heart and great soul show that age is not a measure of greatness, because you are already someone who is making the world a better place. I believe great things await you in life, because someone with such a sincere desire to help others deserves to have their good deeds returned a hundredfold. May the happiness and kindness you spread follow you every step of the way,” wrote Teodora in her letter.
Marek couldn’t wait to share his joy and the heartfelt words Teodora had written with his mother, and she said they were both moved to tears.
“He came running, eyes shining—joy in his voice. He says to me, ‘Mom, mom, look who I got a letter from.’ That sparkle in his eyes and joy in his voice—there’s no way to describe it. He was overjoyed,” said his proud mother Milota to Telegraf.rs.
As his mother recounted, Teodora sent the letter through Marek’s math teacher, and it’s a day Marek will never forget.
To recall, the “Marek’s Cakes” fundraiser was originally started in memory of his sister, who was born prematurely and sadly passed away. Since Kisač is the nearest village to Bački Petrovac, Marek decided to dedicate his fourth fundraising event to his neighbor Teodora, the only survivor of the canopy collapse at the train station in Novi Sad.
