Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić assessed that on Friday evening the police in Niš “did their job very poorly,” that is, they did not react adequately to the incident when a group of citizens threw eggs and stones at members and officials of the Serbian Progressive Party.

Vučić said that “we must be calm, we must not retaliate in the same way,” commenting on the events in Niš and announcing that eggs will be answered with eggs.

“Except that now I know, wherever they throw eggs at anyone, everyone will throw eggs back at them. We must not behave vindictively and I ask people to wait for the reaction of the state and state bodies. Last night the police reacted very poorly,” said Vučić.

Vučić stated today, in Bojnik, as part of a tour of the Toplica and Jablanica districts, that the police also did not react adequately “either in Bogatić or in many other places.”

He said that he “did not sleep” after the events in Niš, and that he believes that he is to blame for the police not reacting more sharply in numerous protests that have been happening in Serbia in recent months.

“(I am) guilty because I wanted the unification of the nation, to respect different opinions… And last night they chased women in Niš with stones and eggs. I am grateful that the mayor (Dragoslav Pavlović) resisted their attacks, and this is done by the worst in Serbia, who do not consider Kosovo a part of Serbia, who consider Republika Srpska a genocidal creation, who want all the worst for Serbia. The competent state bodies will know how to protect citizens more sharply (in the future). Either there will be a sharper response from all state bodies, or we will see which state bodies do not want to apply the law, we can no longer allow violence,” said Vučić.

He stated that the opponents of the government offer “naked dictatorship where no one would have the right to think differently, they would introduce a camp regime of the ‘Red Khmers’.”

He also added that he is surprised that “foreigners have managed to destroy the country so much with their dirty money,” that every student protest so far has been organized “in a criminal way” due to the non-registration of gatherings, and that “violent actions” are being recorded throughout Serbia.

The attack in Niš that Vučić commented on happened on Friday evening, after the several-hour protest of students and citizens ended, and the student orderlies left the park in front of the Officers’ Home and the surrounding streets.
