An American court in Boston has found Kemal Mrndžić (51), the commander of the guard in the notorious Čelebići war camp in central Bosnia, guilty. In this camp, Serbian prisoners were murdered, systematically starved, tortured, and sexually abused, Serbian Times exclusively reported yesterday.
Mrndžić was convicted of concealing his involvement in the persecution and extermination of Bosnian Serbs during the war in Bosnia, of false representation and claims on the basis of which he first obtained refugee status and then became a citizen of the United States, as well as on five other counts.
He was arrested 17 months ago in a special forces police operation at his home near Boston, where he lived under a false name. He had been living in America for over 25 years, and the trial revealed that he had also presented himself as a Serb in the US and skillfully concealed his real name and surname.
Unfortunately for him, a large number of his victims, Serbs whom he had tortured in the Čelebići camp, also came to America at the same time. Their harrowing testimonies contributed to Judge Joshua Levi ultimately delivering the verdict. In his closing remarks, Judge Levi emphasized that he was moved, as he put it, by the “heartbreaking testimonies of surviving Serbian prisoners, whose physical and mental pain inflicted on them by Mrndžić and his fellow guards still haunts them 30 years later.”
One of the camp survivors who testified at Mrndžić’s trial was Željko Živak, who now lives in Chicago. In his exclusive confession to us, he revealed the tortures he and the other prisoners endured during their time in the Čelebići camp.
