Blood donation is one of the most humane acts, because it is a medicine that cannot be bought and is of inestimable value. Along with blood donation, organ donation is a reflection of humanity and self-sacrifice. A true heroine who wrote her name as a record holder in blood donation, but also bequeathed her organs, is Žana Marković from Čačak.

–I started donating blood in 1995 at the Technical Repair Institute. After that, I donated wherever they called me, in the hospital and everywhere it was needed. In total, until two years ago, until I got sick, I donated blood 85 times. I donated most for children, when parents come and beg because their child urgently needs blood. That was always the most important thing to me, says the woman from Čačak.

Žana bequeathed all her organs and informed her family about it. She wants, as she says, to be humane even after life.

–The decision to be an organ donor came simply, from the head. I don’t want to be selfish, if I live, others can live thanks to me. I try to encourage others too, in my company, among the people I know, I also taught my daughters to be voluntary blood donors. I encouraged many friends and acquaintances to become organ and plasma donors, said Žana.

She reveals that she also had a great life struggle with obesity. She weighed 150 kilograms, but she fights like a lioness. Doctors at the Military Medical Academy (VMA) told her that if she did not lose 40 kg in three months, she would end up in a wheelchair, because the cartilage in her right knee had deteriorated.

“All good returns with good”

–I tried alone, but it didn’t work, so in Belgrade, at the Clinic for Obesity with Doctor Subotić, I managed to lose enough weight to be called for stomach surgery. That operation was complicated, instead of an hour and a half, it lasted eight hours, I also had clinical death. After that, everything went downhill – excess skin, excess tissue, and then a problem with the large intestine appeared. All of that was a consequence of the operation. But I continued to fight. Afterwards, I got down to 100 kilograms, then had knee surgery and recovered completely in five months. Today I weigh 52 kilograms. I can walk, I can work, I am still fighting because of the large intestine disease, but I believe it will be fine, the brave woman from Čačak does not give up the fight.

Only one motto guides her in life, and that is to be humane at every moment, whenever she can.

–All good returns with good. Do something nice for everyone today, look to God and good will return to you. I have never regretted any decision. Not even for those three days off that you get when you donate blood. That never meant anything to me. The important thing is that I helped. I was always happy when I came home and said: – I gave blood to a child, to someone who needed it. I would ask all people of good will to look up to me: life is one. Let’s extend someone’s life. Let’s give some joy, be it a child, an adult, or an old person. So that someone else can live – like us – Žana advises.
