The Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago marked the National Day of the Republic of Serbia, February 15, with a formal reception.
The Ivy Room was the place tonight where not only the most prominent people of the Serbian community from several surrounding American states gathered, but also the diplomatic corps, as well as representatives of the city of Chicago, Cook County, and the states of Illinois and Indiana.
On behalf of the Serbian community, the guests were greeted by Metropolitan Longin of Chicago and Consul General Marko Nikolić, and Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales also addressed those present, cheering up the crowd with his sincere performance, emphasizing several times how happy he was to have had the opportunity to visit Serbia.
A speech was, of course, also given by the former Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, who reminded the Serbian immigration that they should be proud of their origin.
The guests were also addressed by representatives of the city of Chicago, who read a letter from Mayor Johnson, and then a striking speech was delivered by Maria Pappas, a favorite among Serbs, the long-time Treasurer of Cook County and a future candidate for mayor.
To ensure that American politics at the Sretenje celebration was not represented only from the Democratic side, Jennifer Davis, the Republican candidate for Congress (8th Congressional District), made an effort, arriving accompanied by Slobodan Boda Jokić, the head of the Republican Party for Maine Township.
And ensuring that Serbian diplomacy from the other side of the Drina was also represented was Tatjana Telić, the Consul of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Chicago.
The new singing group “Zlatni vez” from the Church of St. Nicholas in Lyons provided the artistic experience, girls whose voices delighted everyone at the reception in honor of Serbia’s national holiday.
