After the cold days, real spring warm weather has arrived, and the favorite inhabitants — the long-awaited storks — have arrived in the Cacak village of Beljina. For years now, storks have been returning to the foothills of western Serbia, and their well-known spot on the lamppost along the street was waiting for them to arrange their nest.
-The youngsters, who looked at the sky every day hoping for them, were most delighted by their migration. Storks are guests whose company we always enjoy, and we are always happy when they return, and we love to observe them. I think I read that storks were in this exact spot a hundred years ago, and we are glad to see them again in Beljina. Now there are more and more of them, and it is a true beauty that these unusual birds are right here with us – a resident of the village of Beljina told RINA.
About 1,200 pairs of storks in Serbia
About 1,200 pairs of storks have been recorded in Serbia, but 80 percent of the population nests north of the Sava and Danube rivers. In recent years, these birds have also become welcome guests in the continental part of the country.
-Somehow, the storks have become friends with our people and the region; that is why they return gladly, and that is why no one touches them, and they are delighted when they find themselves in someone’s vicinity. Here in Cacak, we have three recorded pairs of storks across the entire territory. No one touches them – they say at the “Owls on Alert” association.
The arrival of storks in a place announces good news. In earlier years, they also brought a real baby boom with them, as a record number of babies were born in the Cacak maternity hospital shortly after they returned.
