The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, addressed the public on Instagram regarding the incident in Ruzveltova Street, during which a 20-year-old girl was injured, as well as an attack on an elderly woman in Novi Sad, also during the blockades.
At the beginning of his address, Vučić referred to the tragedy at Novi Sad Railway Station.
“Two and a half months have passed since the terrible tragedy in Novi Sad. The state has done its job, as it promised. The prosecution conducted the investigation, the police collected all the information, the prosecution filed charges, and now it is up to the courts to make their decision. In the meantime, we have witnessed the misuse of the tragedy, as usual by the same political subjects who, without the will of the people, without democracy, and without elections, can seize power. And that wouldn’t be a big problem, because in the end we will solve it through a democratic expression of the will of the people. But the problem is when, within a student conflict, you use it for days to call for violence against political opponents. And an even bigger problem is what happened today in Belgrade and Novi Sad. In Belgrade, a girl was injured in a terrible way, because someone very irresponsible tried to get through those who were blocking the road in the fastest possible way,” said Vučić.
He added that the person was arrested and detained.
“The qualification of the crime is the most severe possible. At the same time in Novi Sad, or immediately afterwards, a much older lady was humiliated and injured, who was only guilty of wanting to go to her house and who was guilty only because she thought differently from the protesters, who could be her grandchildren and children. That ugly and terrible picture of humiliating and injuring someone older and only because they think differently must never be repeated in our country. All persons for each incident must be held accountable. I call on everyone, and I will join in myself, I will choose every word I say in the coming period, in order to influence the reduction of tension. But I also ask everyone else, and those who organize illegal gatherings, to at least informally inform us where they will organize them so that we can provide them with police protection from cars, buses, and all other traffic participants,” he emphasized.
Vučić also asked all other political actors to think, because stability, peace, and people’s lives have no alternative.
“We must preserve Serbia from any destabilization and ultimately make all decisions democratically. I am sure that the injured student, whose parents the Minister of Health spoke with, will be fine. I want to believe that the lady I spoke to and wished her good health will also be well in the coming days. And I wish them all the best and their families. But we must return to work and solve problems in parliament and other institutions. That’s what institutions are for. Thank you for listening to me. Serbia can and must move forward into the future,” Vučić concluded.
Let us remind you, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade announced today that they have taken over the case of the incident in Ruzveltova Street, and that M.P. is charged with attempted aggravated murder.
