The authorities have accused those who have been protesting since November 1 last year of almost everything. For terrorism, for the overthrow of the state, and for planning an assassination attempt on the president. But to be guilty for the Serbian footballers being defeated by Albania – that is, one might say, a new level.
Namely, President Vučić claims that the Niš residents who were protesting were whistling in front of the hotel where the national team was staying before the match, and that they de-concentrated them.
After yesterday’s defeat of the Serbian national team against Albania, the “Eagles” could easily fly out of the qualifications for the 2026 World Cup. Before them, Piksi flew away.
Chants of “Piksi, leave!” could be heard from the audience during the match.
And he is leaving. Dragan Stojković Piksi will apparently no longer be the coach.
“I have already talked to the president and the general secretary. Someone who is responsible, and I think I am a responsible person, I offered my resignation, of course,” said Dragan Stojković Piksi, coach of the Serbian football national team, at a press conference after the match with the Albanian national team.
Due to sadness over the footballers’ defeat, and not out of anger, the president of the state says he did not sleep last night. However, it seems he woke up angry, because he blamed the people, especially those who have been protesting against his government for almost a year, for the football debacle.
“Do you want me to remind you how we sent off the national team yesterday? In Niš, for 6-7 hours, when the guys were resting for the match, two or three hundred loafers gathered right in front of the hotel where our national team was. They thought the Albanians came to whistle at them. It wasn’t the Albanians, but the blockaders, because the blockaders didn’t like that 5-6 thousand people who weren’t bothering our footballers gathered on the other side of the city… Shame on you all! Start with yourselves, what have you done for your country, have you built anything anywhere, are you only tearing down your country?”, said Vučić.
“Yes, we are to blame because of your ego you moved the match to that field of a pitch in Leskovac, and because since the beginning of the qualifications we have only scored goals against Andorra and Latvia,” students in the blockade responded to the President of Serbia, via social media accounts.
