The influential British newspaper The Economist has just published its list of the best cities to live in for 2025, evaluating 173 cities worldwide across five key areas: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. One of the most significant changes is that Vienna is no longer first on this list.
It should be noted that Vienna has been declared the best place to live multiple times, consecutively from 2022 to 2024, N1.hr reports.
Vienna is in second place with a total of 97.1 points, while Copenhagen is in first place with 98 points. The Economist cited two prevented terrorist attacks as the reason for this change – one at a pop star Taylor Swift concert and the other at a train station in Vienna.
Namely, this affected the city’s slightly lower ratings in the stability category, which refers to threats, military conflicts, civil unrest, and/or terrorism.
Vienna shares place with Zurich
In fact, the Austrian capital shares second place with Zurich, which also received 97.1 points. Among the 10 cities chosen by the British newspaper as the best places to live are: Melbourne (97 points), Geneva (96.8 points), Sydney (96.6 points), Osaka (96.0 points), Auckland (96.0 points), Adelaide (95.9 points), and Vancouver (95.8 points). At the bottom of the list are Tripoli (40.1 points) and Damascus (30.7 points).
Smaller cities generally received higher ratings. Three cities with more than six million inhabitants are among the top 20. Tokyo, the world’s largest city, is in 13th place, The Economist writes.
