A US nuclear-powered submarine reportedly got tangled in a fishing net off the northern coast of Norway.

A fishing vessel in Tromsø cast its nets hoping for fish, but instead, captain Harald Engen “caught” a submarine.

“We returned to the fish farm in Sommarøy when the coast guard called us,” Engen told Norwegian television NRK. “The submarine got into our net and dragged it two nautical miles north into the sea,” added 22-year-old Engen.

Coast Guard spokesman Kenet Dal confirmed to NRK that the boat had an encounter with the submarine.

The USS Virginia, a fast-attack submarine powered by nuclear reactors and armed with cruise missiles, was in Tromsø as part of an initiative to “deter and defend against an increasingly complex security environment in the North,” according to a US Navy statement.
The propellers of the 115-meter-long submarine became entangled in Engen’s net.

Norway is a founding member of NATO and borders Russia in the Arctic. The US has repeatedly sent ships to the area, reportedly in response to Russian fleet activities.
