US President Donald Trump announced today that Chicago and New York, which are run by Democrats, will be the next cities to be taken over by federal law enforcement forces, similar to the capital Washington, in order to fight crime.
“We will make our cities very, very safe. Chicago is in chaos, so that will probably be next,” the US president said, adding that federal law enforcement forces will “after that also help New York.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegset ordered National Guard troops patrolling the streets of Washington as part of US President Donald Trump’s tougher law enforcement measures to begin carrying firearms, the Pentagon announced today.
The move represents an escalation of Trump’s intervention in the work of the police in the US capital and comes at a time when almost 2,000 National Guard members are stationed in the Democrat-run city, after hundreds of soldiers from several Republican states arrived this week.
Trump originally sent 800 members of the District of Columbia National Guard to assist federal law enforcement agencies in an effort to crack down on crime, homelessness, and illegal immigration.
The Pentagon and the military said last week that the soldiers would not carry weapons. The new guidelines are that they will carry service weapons. The soldiers have not participated in law enforcement and have mostly protected local landmarks.
Trump boasted that the city is safer than ever thanks to his intervention. Today he told reporters that it was “a miracle what happened.” “Washington was a hell of a place,” he said. “But now it’s safe.” He stated that he could extend the presence of troops and federal agents in Washington.
Trump noted that he will ask Congress for two billion dollars to improve the city’s appearance, including repairing roads and replacing street lights. He previously promised to improve the grass around the city to make it look like one of his golf courses. “It will be safe and it will be beautified,” he said.
