U.S. President Donald Trump softened his rhetoric last night regarding future federal support for New York following Zohran Mamdani’s convincing election victory, suggesting that he is open to providing assistance to New York after previously threatening to cut funding.
Donald Trump reiterated that, as he said, communist, Marxist socialists, and globalists had their chance but “brought only disaster,” yet stated that he would help New York because he wants the city to be successful, CNN reported.
“Now let’s see how the communist will do in New York. We’ll see how that ends. And we’ll help them. We want New York to be successful. We’ll help them a little, maybe,” Trump said during a speech at an economic conference in Miami.
Trump stated that the policy of Mamdani, a democratic socialist, reflects the views of Democrats in Congress.
“If you want to see what Democratic congressmen want to do to America, just look at the results of yesterday’s elections in New York where their party installed a communist as mayor of the largest city in the nation. The choice before all Americans could not be clearer – we have a choice between communism and common sense,” Trump said last night.
Before the election in New York, Trump warned that if Mamdani won, he might restrict federal funding for New York, except for the minimum required by law. He said that instead of Mamdani, he would rather support former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, noting that although he is not a “fan” of Cuomo, when choosing between “a bad Democrat and a communist,” he would always choose “the bad Democrat.”
