U.S. forces have launched military operations together with Ecuador against “designated terrorist organizations” within that country, the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced on Tuesday, Politico reports.
The military did not release details of the operation, but the statement suggested it is a continuation of strikes that the administration of Donald Trump has carried out against organizations suspected of drug trafficking in the region.
“We commend the men and women of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces for their unwavering commitment to this fight, demonstrating courage and determination through ongoing actions against narco-terrorists in their country,” said U.S. Marine Corps General Francis L. Donovan, commander of U.S. Southern Command.
Since President Donald Trump took office, the United States has taken aggressive steps to stop the flow of drugs from the Southern Hemisphere. The administration has carried out around 45 strikes on vessels suspected of smuggling in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, resulting in more than 150 deaths.
In January, U.S. military forces conducted an operation in Venezuela to arrest President Nicolás Maduro and transfer him to New York, where he faces charges including drug trafficking.

The security situation in Ecuador has deteriorated in recent years, during which the country has become one of the main hubs for cocaine smuggling.
Over the past year, Ecuadorian authorities have sought to establish close cooperation with the administration of Donald Trump in hopes of receiving assistance. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Ecuador in September and stated that the United States would “blow up” criminal groups if necessary.
During Rubio’s visit, the U.S. officially designated two criminal organizations from Ecuador – Los Lobos and Los Choneros – as terrorist organizations.
So far, the U.S. has conducted military operations near Ecuador, but has not publicly disclosed activities within the country itself.
The U.S. Coast Guard has been deployed in the eastern Pacific, off the coasts of Ecuador, Colombia, and other countries, where it has assisted in intercepting cocaine shipments as part of a mission known as Operation “Pacific Viper.”
Following the operation to capture Maduro, Trump did not rule out the possibility of using military force against targets in other countries in the fight against drug trafficking. However, it had been expected that such strikes might be carried out in Mexico and Colombia, which play a significantly larger role in international narcotics trafficking.
