The United States has set a deadline of June for Ukraine and Russia to reach an agreement to end the nearly four-year-long war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. He told reporters that pressure from Donald Trump’s administration is expected if the June deadline is not met.
“The Americans propose that the war should end by the beginning of this summer and will probably apply pressure on the parties according to this exact timeline,” Zelensky said yesterday, though the statement was under embargo until this morning.
“They say they want everything finished by June. And they will do everything to end the war. They want a clear schedule of all events,” he added.
He noted that the U.S. suggested the next round of trilateral talks take place next week in their country, likely in Miami.
“We have confirmed our participation,” Zelensky said.
Earlier today, Reuters, citing officials who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the topic, reported that U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators discussed an ambitious goal for Moscow and Kyiv to reach a peace agreement by March, although this deadline is considered unlikely due to disagreements over a key issue—territory.
Under the framework being discussed by U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators, any eventual agreement would be put to a Ukrainian referendum, alongside parliamentary elections.
Russia is pressuring Ukraine to withdraw from Donbas, where fighting continues, but Kyiv has refused.
