Following news of arrests at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad, the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that a total of six people, including the dean of the faculty, have been arrested on suspicion of having illegally damaged the state budget for over 181 million dinars.

“Due to the existence of grounds for suspicion that he committed the criminal acts of money laundering and the extended criminal act of abuse of official position, B. J. (65), the person responsible for financial affairs at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad, was arrested, while V. Š. (40), a manager in the faculty’s Legal, Personnel, and General Affairs Service, and Đ. M. (61), the de facto responsible person of a student cooperative in Novi Sad, are suspected of the criminal act of money laundering and the extended criminal act of abuse of official position in aiding,” the statement said.

In this operation, it is added, the dean of the faculty S. B. (61) and S. T. (46), a clerk from the faculty’s Financial Accounting Service, were also arrested due to the existence of grounds for suspicion that they committed the extended criminal act of abuse of official position as accomplices, as well as R. G. (52), a manager within the Financial Accounting Service, who, in addition to this criminal act, is also charged with the extended criminal act of tax evasion.

As suspected, Đ. M., by prior agreement with B. J. and V. Š., from the account of the Novi Sad student cooperative, over 3 and 2 years, converted into cash 15,511,330 dinars out of a total of 21,235,508 dinars that the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad paid to this cooperative on the basis of false invoices issued for services of its members that were not performed. He then gave this money to V. Š., while he kept more than 1.7 million dinars in the cooperative’s account, thereby acquiring unlawful financial gain for it. In this way, it is suspected, they damaged the budget of Serbia by more than 17.2 million dinars, the statement emphasizes.

R. G., it is added, is suspected of having, from 2022 to June 2024, with the intention of avoiding payment of corporate income tax, twice provided inaccurate data to the Tax Administration in order to show a lower basis for calculating market-generated profit tax, thereby damaging the state budget by 115,968,480 dinars.

Also, there are grounds for suspicion that B. J., R. G., S. B., and S. T., from January 2022 to the end of 2024, illegally calculated taxes and contributions based on higher salaries paid than prescribed, thereby damaging the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad by 47,433,749 dinars.

The suspects have been detained for up to 48 hours and, with a criminal complaint, will be brought before the competent prosecutor.
