Students of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade are demanding an investigation into accountability and the dismissal of Prof. Dr. Jelena Drulović, director of the University Clinical Center of Serbia (UKCS), as well as Dr. Marko Ercegovac, director of the UKCS Emergency Center, and Dr. Dušan Micić, head of the Intensive Care Unit at the Emergency Center.

The reason for their dismissal is that, on March 17 of this year, during the visit of the President of Serbia to the institution, they allowed unauthorized individuals to enter the intensive care unit without proper protective equipment, increasing the risk to the health of patients in that department.

The students published their demand for an investigation and the dismissal of those responsible on their social media profiles, referring to events at the University Clinical Center of Serbia (UKCS) on March 17, 2025.

The request calls for accountability and dismissal due to the following:

  • Unauthorized entry of individuals into the intensive care unit without adequate protective equipment, creating an increased risk to the health and lives of immunocompromised patients.
  • Unauthorized entry of journalist crews into the same unit, allowing them to photograph and record patients, violating personal dignity and endangering their health.
  • Disclosure of confidential medical information about patients to unauthorized individuals, which was later publicly revealed by the President of Serbia, violating patient dignity, family privacy, and the right to confidentiality.

To recall, medical experts and the public in Serbia and the region were shocked when the President of Serbia entered the intensive care unit with journalist crews during his visit to Macedonian citizens injured in a fire who had been transferred to Serbia for treatment. According to experts, this act violated all healthcare regulations regarding the protection of patients in intensive care.

Medical students, currently protesting in blockade, are also demanding:

  • Misdemeanor proceedings against institutions and employees involved in the unauthorized disclosure of patient information.
  • An extraordinary inspection of the Emergency Center’s operations.
  • Regulatory oversight of the institution.
  • Intervention by the Commissioner for Public Information and Data Protection regarding the violation of patients’ right to privacy.
