The United Trade Unions of Serbia (Sloga) expressed serious concern about the growing number of poor people in Serbia today, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and called on the relevant institutions to focus on real, tangible, and serious measures to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
In a statement, Sloga noted that the number of poor people in Serbia is relentlessly increasing and that in a country where around 800,000 people live in absolute poverty and every fifth person receives cash social assistance, social and employment insecurity are becoming commonplace, and the fate of children growing up in such conditions is particularly worrying.

The union pointed out that according to estimates by United Nations agencies, absolute poverty in Serbia is at high levels. Still, they believe these figures are underestimated, as many citizens who survive on minimal incomes due to personal dignity do not admit their poverty.
Stating that poverty is not just an economic issue, Sloga emphasized that it also has a cultural dimension and that the growing functional illiteracy, in the form of a lack of information about the real picture in which we live, further exacerbates Serbia’s already gloomy picture.
“Serbia needs a comprehensive reform and a long-term solution to the problem of poverty because every citizen, and especially every child living in poverty, is a defeat for our society,” the union warned.
