The Croatian Post has launched a pilot project that will involve citizens in the distribution of mail within buildings.

A promotional flyer sent by a reader of the “Tportal” portal states: “Deliver mail in your building and earn.” Tenants who join the project will receive compensation for delivering bills and other mail to their neighbours, up to 300 euros.

The Croatian Post explains that the goal of the project is to reduce the time postmen spend distributing letters in large buildings, where they often lose several hours due to the number and improperly marked mailboxes.

“The assessment is that someone who knows the building and the tenants could do this job more efficiently, and the postman could use that time to deliver other types of mail to other addresses,” HP states.

Citizens can earn between 100 and 300 euros

Tenants who join the project will receive compensation that depends on the number of mailboxes and the frequency of mail distribution, with the amount being between 100 and 300 euros per month. The project is open to people who already have a job, as well as to pensioners or those with free time needed for legally regulated second employment.

The Post emphasizes that foreign workers, who make up an increasing part of the staff, deliver mail from building to building, but will not be involved in sorting it into mailboxes. The rights and obligations of the tenants will be defined by contract, and in the case of irresponsible conduct, the engagement can be terminated.

Lack of workforce

The pilot project comes at a time when the Croatian Post is experiencing a shortage of workforce, Telegram.hr writes. Despite the salary being tripled this year by a total of 20 percent, advertisements for postmen remain open, and there is an insufficient number of candidates.

According to the data from the Croatian Employment Service, HP is currently looking for 15 postmen in Zagreb, 10 in Split, five in Dubrovnik, as well as several for express delivery in Istria and on the Adriatic.

HP reports that the interest of citizens in this flexible form of employment is already visible, and the project is also conceived as a compensation for the lack of workers in the regular postal services.
