The Consul General of Serbia in New York, Vladimir Bozovic, pointed out today, at the opening of the 14th annual Tesla Spirit Conference at the New Yorker Hotel, that the scientific legacy and personal ethics of Nikola Tesla represent a lasting civilizational compass, especially in the modern era of accelerated development of artificial intelligence.

Bozovic emphasized that this year’s conference has a special significance because it is held in a year marking 170 years since the birth of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest minds in the history of humanity, as well as 250 years since the founding of the United States of America—the country that was Tesla’s home for most of his life and where he achieved his most significant scientific and technological contributions.

Speaking about Tesla’s life path, he stated that Tesla did not come to America as a refugee, but as an already established engineer and scientist, and that it was precisely in New York where he achieved his greatest heights—from victory in the “War of Currents” to visionary ideas about wireless communication and energy transmission, which still shape the modern world today, announced the Consulate of Serbia in New York.

He emphasized that Tesla was not only a brilliant scientist, but also a moral vertical—an example of work ethic, modesty, dedication to the common good, and deep-rootedness in the Serbian cultural tradition, whose values should still serve as a landmark in a time of accelerated technological development and increasingly complex ethical challenges.

In that context, he stated that the initiative for erecting a monument to Nikola Tesla in New York continues as a joint project of the Republic of Serbia, the Serbian-American community, and partner Tesla organizations.

As he said, it is planned for the monument to represent a gift to the city of New York and a permanent reminder of Tesla’s immeasurable contribution to the world of science and civilization, with the goal of it being unveiled on July 10, 2026, on the day of the 170th anniversary of his birth.

Bozovic also pointed out that for generations of Serbs in the United States of America and around the world, Nikola Tesla represented a symbol of inspiration, strength, and dignity—a “guiding star” that showed it was possible to combine loyalty to a new homeland with the preservation of one’s own identity and spiritual values.

Distinguished scientists and academics, representatives of scientific and educational institutions, the diplomatic and consular corps, the Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as other guests dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the scientific and cultural heritage of Nikola Tesla, participated in the conference.

The General Consulate of the Republic of Serbia in New York is one of the co-organizers of the conference and has provided the most significant institutional support so far this year.
