A driver plowed into pedestrians and cyclists on Oleron Island in western France, injuring 10 people, some of whom are in serious condition.
A local man in his mid-thirties deliberately drove into the crowd and was arrested after being incapacitated with a taser, authorities said, according to the BBC.
The man covered a certain distance between two villages on the island, hitting several people, including a young girl, said the local mayor.
He eventually left the vehicle, tried to set it on fire, and then fled, the official added.
The public prosecutor said the suspect is known to the police and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) at the time of his arrest.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said that an investigation into the incident has been opened and that he is on his way to the scene.
Local media reported that gas cylinders were found in the suspect’s car trunk.
Eyewitnesses described seeing a series of incidents in several locations on the island, which ended in front of a bakery.
