U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Tehran proposed negotiations after his threat to attack Iran over the crackdown on demonstrators and the deaths of several hundred people.
Trump said last night that his administration is negotiating the scheduling of a meeting with Tehran, but warned that it may need to act first as reports of a rising death toll continue to mount and the government keeps arresting demonstrators.
“The meeting is being arranged, but we may have to act even before the meeting because of what is happening. But the meeting is being arranged. Iran called, they want to negotiate,” Trump told reporters last night.
Iran did not issue a statement regarding Trump’s remarks, but earlier warned that the U.S. military and Israel would be “legitimate targets” if the United States uses force to protect demonstrators.
At least 544 people have been killed, 496 demonstrators and 48 members of the security forces, while about 10,600 people have been detained during two weeks of protests, according to data from the U.S. activist organization Human Rights Activists News Agency.
Due to the internet shutdown in Iran and the disruption of telephone lines, monitoring the protests from abroad is more difficult.
Trump has already expressed support for the demonstrators. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous U.S. officials, reported over the weekend that Trump was presented with military options for an attack on Iran, but has not yet made a final decision.
Demonstrations against the Iranian government were held last night in Westwood, Los Angeles, home to the largest Iranian community outside Iran.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded after a truck drove into demonstrators. The vehicle struck one person, no one was seriously injured, and the truck driver was arrested.
