A large number of citizens and students from the State University of Novi Pazar (DUNP) gathered in front of the university building to see off a group of students who have just set off on foot to Novi Sad, to attend the protest on November 1st marking the anniversary of the great tragedy in that city.

A group of students from the State University of Novi Pazar departed shortly before 1 p.m., heading to Novi Sad on foot to participate in the protest on November 1st, organized by local students on the anniversary of the collapse of the roof structure at the city’s railway station.

Eight DUNP students were seen off by many fellow students and citizens, who had gathered in front of the university building.

Before starting their journey, which is 340 kilometers long, they all held a sixteen-minute silence in memory of the victims of the Novi Sad tragedy.

The people of Novi Pazar applauded the brave young men and women who dared to begin the long journey on foot.

Together to Raška

As the students explained, for the first stretch of the journey—about 20 kilometers to Raška—they were joined by their fellow citizens.

The students emphasized that, for now, only the first part of the route to Novi Sad is known, and it goes as follows: RAŠKA – BALJEVAC – UŠĆE – MAGLIČ – KRALJEVO.

The rest of the route, they said, will be announced later, as the plan is dynamic and subject to changes due to weather conditions, safety concerns, and other unforeseen circumstances.

“16 Days for 16 Victims”

The walk by DUNP students has been named “16 Days for 16 Victims”, as that is how many days it will take them to reach Novi Sad.

The goal, this courageous youth points out, is to show solidarity and draw attention to the corrupt regime in Serbia.

Emina Spahić, a DUNP student participating in the walk, told N1 that this is their most ambitious challenge yet, but that their energy is strong.

“We have the energy and the will to reach our goal because of the 16 people who lost their lives. They died because of this regime,” she said, emphasizing that more students will join the group as the walk progresses.

“There is a route that will be gradually published on our social media; some days we’ll cover 30 kilometers, some 20 or 25. I don’t know what awaits us, but we’re ready for rain, snow, storms. As for overnight stays, we will definitely need help from citizens, and we hope they’ll reach out and offer us a place to sleep. We’ve brought a tent as well, so if needed, we’ll camp. We expect a lot of people on November 1st—it will be a very emotional day that we will never forget,” she said.

She also emphasized that each day, DUNP students will post on social media in support of a child beneficiary of the Budi human foundation.
