Amid rising tensions in Serbia and ahead of a massive student-led protest in Belgrade on Saturday, we call for calm and for the demonstrations to be peaceful. We call on the authorities to allow the unimpeded holding of protests, said UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Jeremy Laurence.

The UN Human Rights Office reminds Serbia that it is obliged under international human rights law to protect and respect the full realization of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

“We also call for the protection of human rights defenders, journalists, and members of civil society, and remind the authorities that they must be allowed to carry out their work freely and safely,” it was announced.
